If you haven't been, the
Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is an incredible, hands-on science museum for kids of all ages. And on the first Tuesday of the month, San Diego residents get free admission. I suggest arriving early because it will get crowded.
Although regular admission prices are not low-cost ($11.75 for adults, $9.75 for kids 3-12), a basic family membership is relatively affordable. The $79 annual membership works out to about $6.60 per month and that includes 2 adults and up to 6 kids in the same family. Unlike a Zoo membership, you don't need to purchase separate memberships for your kids after they turn 3. And although you won't find this listed on their website, you can add a caregiver to your family membership for just $10 extra, which is great if you have a sitter or grandparent that could take your kids while you're working.
As a mother of 2 kids under age 5, where we end up spending most of our time is upstairs at Kid City. It is a play area reserved just for kids 5 and under. (Older siblings are allowed, but need to stay with their parent since this area is designed for young children.) There is a fenced off area for babies under 18 months with padded shapes to explore and crawl over. There is a fire engine to play in, a magnetic board with letters and gears, a very popular air-powered ball exhibit, a grocery store complete with carts, food and moving conveyor belt, computers, and more. My kids can easily spend 1-2 hours just in Kid City.
